Don-Jo Manufacturing makes the door hardware that shows up on most commercial jobs after the lockset goes in — latch protectors, wrap-around plates, strike reinforcements, hinge reinforcements, door stops, kick plates, and hinges. It is not a glamorous product category. It is the hardware that keeps a door from being pried, kicked, or worn out before its time.

The catalog runs deep. Over 1,800 SKUs in our system, covering most standard door configurations in commercial and light institutional applications. Multiple finishes on most items — satin chrome, bright brass, satin nickel, oil rubbed bronze, duranodic, prime coated, silver coated, and raw steel depending on the product. Prices are low. This is workhorse hardware, priced accordingly.

Latch Protectors

A latch protector is a steel plate that covers the latch bolt and strike area on the edge of an outswinging door — the face that is exposed to the exterior. Without one, a thin pry bar can shimmy the latch bolt back in seconds. With one, the latch recess is covered and the shimmy attack is blocked.

Don-Jo's latch protector line covers standard 2-3/4" backset doors, Adams Rite latch configurations, and multiple door thicknesses. Gauges run from 12 (.104) to lighter stock for low-security applications. Hardware is included.

When a customer calls about latch protectors for an Adams Rite installation — typically a storefront aluminum door — the LP-312P-EBF-SL is the right pull. The standard 9211-SL is for conventional steel door frames with a standard ANSI latch. Confusing the two results in a plate that does not cover the strike area properly.

Wrap-Around Plates

A wrap-around plate reinforces the area around a door knob or lever latch on a wood door — the section most vulnerable to a kick-in. The plate distributes the force of an impact across a larger area of the door and frame and covers the gap between the latch face and the door edge.

Don-Jo makes wrap-arounds in two main configurations: a standard flat plate for single-door applications and a hospital push/pull version for doors with latch locking on both sides. Available in brass, stainless steel, oil rubbed bronze, and duranodic. Most models cover both 2-3/8" and 2-3/4" backsets.

Strike Plates and Extended Lip Strikes

Don-Jo makes a full line of ANSI and non-ANSI strike plates, extended lip strikes, T-strikes, and dust-proof strikes. Extended lip strikes are the go-to repair item on out-of-alignment doors — the longer lip picks up the latch bolt when the door has settled or swelled. Dust-proof strikes block the strike pocket when the door is open.

On service calls where a latch bolt is not catching cleanly, an extended lip strike solves the problem in five minutes without touching the door frame. It is the first thing we recommend before any frame adjustment work.

Hinge Reinforcements

A hinge reinforcement plate is a flat steel backer that installs behind the door hinge mortise on the door or frame edge. On wood doors with shallow hinge pockets, the reinforcement distributes hinge screw loads and slows down a kick-in at the hinge side. Don-Jo makes them in 3-1/2", 4-1/2", and 5" versions to match standard hinge sizes.

Full Mortise Hinges

Don-Jo's BB74545 is a 4-1/2" x 4-1/2" full mortise ball bearing hinge — the standard commercial hinge size for 1-3/4" doors. ANSI A8112 rated. 5-knuckle, steel, 0.134 gauge. Available in satin chrome, bright brass, satin brass, bright chrome, oil rubbed bronze, and primed for painting. Mounting hardware included.

Don-Jo also stocks plain bearing hinges and spring hinges in the same 4-1/2" x 4-1/2" format for lighter-duty or self-closing applications.

Door Stops

Don-Jo makes wall-mounted, floor-mounted, and applied door stops in cast aluminum and steel. The 1432 and 1450 series are standard wall/floor stops. The 1420 series is an applied stop — a longer plate that mounts to the baseboard where a standard stop would hit drywall. Multiple finishes.

Kick Plates

Don-Jo kick plates are steel plates that mount to the push side of a door from floor level to approximately 8" or 10" up — the zone that takes foot and cart traffic. They protect the door surface from cosmetic damage and are standard on commercial applications where carts, gurneys, or foot traffic would otherwise scratch or dent a door face.

KP series sizes run from 6" x 28" to 8" x 34". Available in bright brass, satin aluminum, and stainless finishes. Mounting hardware included.

Coordinators

A coordinator is a mechanical device for double doors that ensures the door with the strike closes before the door with the latch bolt — so the latch has a strike to engage instead of hitting the edge of the other door. Don-Jo's 2021 series coordinator is UL listed, ANSI Type 21 rated, and available in multiple finishes for 48" to 96" door pairs.

Pro Tip: Match Gauge to Application

Don-Jo makes similar-looking products in multiple gauges. The 9211 latch protector is 12 gauge (.104) — suitable for commercial applications where forced entry resistance matters. Lower-gauge versions in the same line are lighter and cheaper but deflect under load. On an exterior commercial door, use the heaviest gauge the application supports. On an interior storage room or light-duty application, a lighter plate is adequate. The SKU and product name always list the gauge — check it before ordering.

FAQ

What finish should I order for an exterior commercial door?

Duranodic and stainless coatings hold up better on exteriors than chrome or brass plated. For outright weather exposure, raw steel is a working finish — prime and paint it on site. Satin chrome (626) is acceptable in covered exterior applications. Bright brass (605) is primarily an interior finish on commercial work.

What is the difference between a latch protector and a wrap-around plate?

A latch protector covers the latch bolt recess on the edge of the door — it blocks a shimmy attack from the exterior edge. A wrap-around plate covers the knob or lever hole area on the face of the door — it reinforces the wood against a kick-in force at the lock area. They solve different problems. Most well-hardened doors use both.

Are Don-Jo hinges suitable for fire-rated doors?

Don-Jo's BB series hinges are ANSI A8112 rated. Whether they meet the hinge specification for a specific fire-rated opening depends on the door/frame manufacturer's listing and the hinge's UL certification for that use. Check the door label and fire door hardware requirements before substituting hinges on a labeled fire opening.

Does Don-Jo make replacement strike plates for standard ANSI locks?

Yes. Don-Jo's standard strikes are designed to fit ANSI 4-7/8" x 1-1/4" strike pocket dimensions. Their extended lip strikes add 1/4" to 3/8" of lip length to help latch bolt engagement on doors that have settled or swollen out of alignment.
