QEL2227EO3689 Von Duprin 22 Series Exit Only Non Fire-Rated Surface Vertical Rod Exit Device with Quiet Electric Latch Retraction in Aluminum
The QEL2227EO 3 689 is a Von Duprin 2227 Series surface vertical rod exit device with Quiet Electric Latch Retraction — a 36" device for a 3-foot door up to 84" tall, in Aluminum Painted (689/US28). Exit Only: push bar operation from the inside, no outside trim, no cylinder required for this function. Free mechanical egress is always available, powered or not.
The 2227 latches at the header and the threshold instead of the strike jamb — the standard choice for pairs of doors where both leaves have to be active. The vertical rods are surface-mounted and visible on the door face. It covers stock hollow metal doors with 86 or 161 cutouts and fits stiles as narrow as 3-5/8" (92 mm). The device is non-handed and field reversible.
Quiet Electric Latch Retraction (QEL). A motor pulls the latches in on a signal from an access control system, card reader or building automation system, so the door releases remotely without the clack of a solenoid. Auto-adjusting latch throw and on-board installation and troubleshooting diagnostics are built into the device. Electrical load is 24VDC, 1.0A inrush for 0.5 seconds and 0.14A holding — low enough for a standard Schlage PS902 2-amp supply. Allegion’s published one-way wire runs: 200 ft on 18 AWG, 320 ft on 16 AWG, 500 ft on 14 AWG, 800 ft on 12 AWG.
Dogging. On a QEL device the electronic latch retraction takes the place of mechanical dogging — hold the latches retracted for free entry during business hours and drop them at close. This part number is the standard QEL. If the job specifically calls for manual hex-key dogging on the device, Von Duprin builds that as the HD-QEL variant under a separate part number, non fire-rated devices only — call us and we will quote it.
Pro-Tip from Our Locksmiths: Latch retraction is specified per leaf — one QEL2227EO does one door. On a pair, price two. Run the electric power transfer (EPT-2 or EPT-10) while the frame is open; cutting one into a hung door is the part that eats the afternoon. And this is the non fire-rated device — a fire-rated opening needs the 2227EO-F, and it has to be self-latching, self-closing, and under the control of the fire alarm system.
