This is the closer you put on a door you never want to think about again. The LCN 4040XP is the workhorse of the heavy-duty surface closer world — the one that ends up on school doors, hospital corridors, office entries, and any opening that gets slammed a few hundred times a day. It is a true Grade 1 (ANSI/BHMA A156.4) closer built for high-traffic, high-abuse institutional use, and it earns that grade in the field, not just on paper.
The "RW/PA" in the part number is the part that matters when you're ordering. You get the standard regular arm plus the parallel-arm (PA) shoe and bracket in the same box. That means one closer covers you whether you mount it on the pull side with the arm sticking out (regular arm, the strongest mechanical advantage) or up on the push side tucked back against the door in a parallel-arm mount where the arm sits cleaner and is harder to grab or vandalize. You decide at the door — you're not locked into one mounting before you've even seen the frame.
Inside is the cast-iron body and full rack-and-pinion mechanism LCN is known for, with separately adjustable closing speed, latching speed, and backcheck so you can dial the door in exactly. It's non-handed and field-adjustable spring size 1 through 6, so the same unit handles a light interior door or a heavy exterior one — set the spring to suit the door width and weight on site. Tri-style mounting (regular, parallel, and top-jamb) is supported by the hardware LCN ships, and it swings to a full 120 degrees.
This one is the 689 aluminum-painted finish — the standard, most-requested architectural finish — and it comes with the full plastic cover for a clean, finished look.
