Product Description
1431-O-TB-10BE Sargent 1431 Powerglide Surface Door Closer with Standard Arm and Thru-Bolts, Dark Oxidized Satin Bronze, Non-Handed
The 1431 is the closer Sargent built for buildings that take a beating — school corridors, hospital wings, university back-of-house, and any commercial opening where a door swings a thousand times a day and nobody can afford a callback. Standard arm pull-side mounting is the cleanest install on a typical commercial frame: cylinder on the door, arm reaching to the frame face. The TB option ships the closer with thru-bolts instead of wood/sheet-metal screws, so the closer body grips the full thickness of the door — the right call any time the door is hollow metal, fire-rated, or already showing fastener pull-out from a previous closer.
- ANSI/BHMA A156.4 Grade 1, exceeds 15 million cycles — the spec for institutional and high-traffic commercial openings
- UL 10C and UL/cUL listed for fire doors — passes positive pressure test, qualifies for fire-rated openings
- Field-adjustable spring size 1 through 6 — one closer fits interior offices through heavy exterior storefronts
- Thru-bolt mounting included — the right fastener pattern for hollow metal, fire-rated, and previously-failed installs
The 1431 body is cast iron with a full rack-and-pinion mechanism and a 1-1/2 inch piston for superior door control. All-weather hydraulic fluid keeps the closer operating consistently through extreme heat and cold without re-tuning between seasons. Three independent valves give the installer real control over sweep speed, latch speed, and backcheck intensity — field-adjusted per door, with the closer mounted and the door under operation. Backcheck protects the door, frame, and hinges from being slammed into the back-stop on a hard pull, which extends the life of the entire opening, not just the closer. The standard non-corrosive plastic cover ships with the closer; metal covers and lead-lined covers are available as field upgrades when the application calls for them.
Mounting flexibility is the 1431's other big advantage: the same closer body installs in standard pull-side, top jamb, parallel arm, or track configurations — switch the mounting kit, not the closer. Self-sticking templates are supplied for the standard install paths, so the layout is straightforward in the field. The 10BE finish (Dark Oxidized Satin Bronze) is a premium architectural finish that reads warm against bronze and brown frames; it is BHMA equivalent to US10B/613 in the legacy code system. For a comparable cylinder on a different mount, see the Sargent Door Closer category; for arms in other reveal or hold-open configurations, switch the second-token in the SKU (UH for universal hold-open, PSH for parallel stop-and-hold, P10 for parallel arm).

Compliance and Codes
UL 10C listed for positive pressure fire test, UL/cUL listed for fire-rated door assemblies. ANSI/BHMA A156.4 Grade 1 (exceeds 15 million cycles minimum). ADA accessible in all applications except push-side track installs (closer must be field-adjusted to meet local opening force requirements at 5 lbs maximum on accessible doors).
What's in the Box
Sargent 1431 Powerglide closer body (size 1-6 adjustable), O standard arm assembly, thru-bolt mounting hardware, high-impact plastic cover, and self-sticking installation template. Mounting brackets for parallel arm or track configurations are sold separately when the install path requires them; metal and lead-lined covers are also available as accessories.
Pro-Installer FAQ
Q: Why specify TB (thru-bolts) instead of standard wood screws?
A: Three reasons. (1) Hollow metal doors don't hold wood/sheet-metal screws under closer load — they pull through. (2) Fire-rated doors require thru-bolts on most listings to maintain the rating. (3) When you're replacing a closer that pulled out of the door, the existing holes are oversized; thru-bolts pass through to a backing plate or mounting plate on the opposite face and grip independent of the original holes. If your door is solid wood with intact factory hardware, regular screws work fine and you can skip the TB option.
Q: Will the O Standard Arm work on a parallel arm install?
A: No. The O arm is designed for standard pull-side mounting only. Parallel arm installs require P10, PS, or PSH arm packages — the geometry is different and the arms are not interchangeable. Order the arm that matches your mounting condition; do not field-modify a standard arm to a parallel application.
Q: How do I set spring size in the field?
A: The 1431 ships from the factory at size 3, which is correct for most interior commercial doors. For lighter interior offices, dial down to size 1 or 2. For standard exterior doors, size 4. For heavy or oversized exterior doors, size 5 or 6. Adjustment is hex-key on the closer body; rotate to the size mark, then verify opening force on the door under operation. Do not preset off-door — the spring needs to be tuned against the actual door weight and seal resistance.

Warranty Information
Sargent (ASSA ABLOY) Limited Warranty
Sargent, an ASSA ABLOY brand, warrants its door closers and operators sold in the United States to be free from defects in workmanship and materials under normal use and service.
Coverage period for this product (Sargent 1431 Powerglide Series): twenty-five (25) years on mechanical components from the date of delivery to the original purchaser, when properly installed and maintained per the manufacturer's installation instructions.
What is covered: defects in workmanship and materials under normal use and service. Liability is limited to repair or replacement of the product or component part that proves defective during the warranty period.
What is NOT covered: defects or damage arising from improper installation (including incorrect arm selection for the mounting condition, wrong fastener pattern for the door substrate, or installation outside the closer's specified door size and weight range), lack of or improper maintenance, modification of the closer body or arm, abuse, accident, normal wear of the cover or finish, exposure to corrosive environments beyond the product's rating, or use of non-Sargent arms, brackets, covers, or replacement parts.
Conditions that void warranty: any modification made to the product, including drilling, machining, or substitution of non-original components, voids the warranty regardless of whether the modification causes or contributes to the alleged defect. Field welding to the closer body or arm voids the warranty.
Finish coverage: the 10BE Dark Oxidized Satin Bronze finish is covered for two (2) years from the date of delivery against defects in finish workmanship under normal interior or protected-exterior use. Direct exposure to harsh marine, industrial, or chemical environments is excluded from finish coverage. Field touch-up materials are available; using non-Sargent touch-up materials voids finish coverage.
Implied warranties and damages: this warranty is in lieu of all other express warranties. To the extent permitted by law, all implied warranties are limited to the duration of this warranty. The manufacturer shall not be liable for any incidental or consequential damages, including labor cost to remove and reinstall a defective closer. Some states do not allow limitations on how long an implied warranty lasts or the exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages, so the above limitation or exclusions may not apply to you. This warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may also have other rights which vary from state to state.
Claim procedure: for warranty claims, contact Lock Depot at sales@lock-depot.com or 561-753-4660. Include your order number, the closer body or arm in question, the install date, and a brief description of the defect. Lock Depot will coordinate the warranty claim with the manufacturer on your behalf, including any required prior authorization, return shipping instructions, and inspection. Do not return the product directly to the manufacturer without Lock Depot's authorization — unauthorized returns may not be accepted.
