The door that has to stay open, until it really can't

Hospital corridors. School hallways. Anywhere carts and gurneys move all day. Propping a fire door open with a wedge is the wrong answer, and every facilities manager who's had a code inspector walk the building already knows it. You need the door open for traffic. You need it shut and latched the second the alarm trips. That's what an electrified hold-open closer does, and it's not the same product as the surface closer holding your average office door.

The LCN 3133 is a concealed Sentronic electrified closer built for exactly this. It sits inside the door and frame instead of bolted to the face of either, holds the door open against a magnet, and releases the instant it gets a signal from the fire alarm panel or loses power. Nobody's wedging a door stop under it, and nobody's getting written up on the next fire inspection for a door that was propped open with a rubber doorstop and a prayer.

Concealed versus the surface closer you already know

Most of the closers we've written up on this site mount to the face of the door and frame, visible arm and all. The 3133 doesn't. It's built into the door edge and the frame head, so there's no exposed arm for a gurney to clip, no visible hardware to clash with a lobby that spent real money on its trim package, and nothing sticking out for a vandalism-prone corridor to chew on. That's the trade a concealed closer makes: harder to service without pulling the door prep apart, easier to live with every day it's not being serviced.

Two arms, same closer body, order the right one

The 3133 ships two ways, and they're not interchangeable after the fact. The 3133 with hold-open arm is the one for the corridor-traffic scenario above. It holds the door open on the magnetic release and lets go on signal. The 3133 with standard arm is the same closer body without the hold-open function, for an opening that just needs a controlled, code-compliant close with no daytime hold-open at all. Order by the job, not by habit. Swapping arm types later means new hardware, not a field adjustment.

The one visible piece of a concealed closer

Because the closer body itself is hidden in the door and frame, the only part of a concealed unit anyone sees day to day is the small cover plate at the door edge. Order that in the finish that matches the rest of the corridor's hardware, Satin Chrome on most of the jobs we ship. A mismatched plate on an otherwise coordinated hallway is the kind of detail a facilities director notices on the punch-list walk and asks you to explain.

Wire it to a real alarm circuit, not a battery magnet

A hold-open closer on a fire door has to release off the building's supervised fire alarm system. Full stop. A battery-powered magnetic door holder that "looks similar" from the hardware aisle is not the same device and doesn't belong on a rated opening. If your electrical contractor is asking whether the 3133 needs to tie into the FACP, the answer is yes. That's the entire point of specifying an electrified closer instead of a cheap magnet and a wedge.

The three adjustments a tech actually touches

Once it's installed, three settings do the real work: closing speed, latch speed, and back-check. Closing speed controls how fast the door swings through most of its arc. Latch speed kicks in for the last few inches, slow enough that the door doesn't slam the frame but fast enough to actually latch, and that matters more than people think, because a fire door that swings shut but doesn't latch has failed its entire job. Back-check cushions the door before it can be thrown into a wall or an aide's shoulder, and it's what keeps the closer itself from getting torn out of the frame on a door that gets kicked open hard, over and over, for years.

Who actually specs this, and why it costs more up front

Nobody stumbles onto the 3133 by accident. It shows up on a set of drawings because a fire/life-safety consultant or an architect working a hospital, school, or assisted-living renovation wrote it into the hardware schedule, usually because the corridor door has to stay open for daily traffic and the AHJ won't sign off on a wedge. It costs more than a surface closer, and the concealed prep costs more to install than a face-mounted body. Facilities managers sometimes push back on that number until you walk them through what a failed fire inspection costs in re-work, not to mention the liability if that corridor door doesn't self-close during an actual fire. Once they've had that conversation once, they stop asking why the concealed unit costs what it costs.

Common questions

Does the 3133 work on a door that isn't fire rated?

It can, but you're paying for a life-safety feature you don't need. If the opening isn't rated and doesn't require a hold-open-then-release sequence, a standard surface closer like the ones on our 4110 parallel arm breakdown costs less and services easier.

Can I retrofit this into an existing frame, or does it need new prep?

Concealed closers need concealed prep, in the door top rail and the frame head. Retrofitting one into a door that was never mortised for it is a real door-shop job, not a weekend install. Confirm the prep exists before you order.

What happens to the door on a power outage?

It releases and closes. That's the fail-safe behavior you want on a fire door. Loss of power gets treated the same as an alarm signal, so the door never stays held open with no way to release it.

Is the hold-open arm field-convertible to a standard arm?

No. Order the function you need. The magnetic hold-open hardware is part of the arm assembly, not an add-on to the standard arm, so converting one to the other is a parts swap, not an adjustment.
