A stairwell door in a high-rise doesn't get the same electrified hardware as the office suite three floors down. Code officials spent decades learning what happens when a stairwell locks the wrong way during a fire, and the fix bans two of the most common access-control tools on that exact opening: electric strikes and mag locks. Why a strike or a mag lock gets rejected here

How do I know if I need left-hand or right-hand?

Stand outside the door on the key/cylinder side with the door closed. If the hinges are on your left, order left-hand (Z7830LUG); if the hinges are on your right, order right-hand (Z7830RUG). Measure the actual door — don't guess from a floor plan that might be mirrored.

Does the Z7800 need a separate power supply?

Yes. It's a lock body, not a powered system on its own — it needs a 12 or 24VDC source sized for the lock's draw, plus whatever fire-alarm interface or access-control panel is triggering the release. Size the power supply to every device on that circuit, not just this one lock.

What happens to the Z7800 if the building loses power?

As shipped, fail-safe: no power means no lock, and the door releases. That's the behavior code wants on an egress stairwell. If the specific opening needs the opposite behavior, the lock is field reversible to fail-secure; confirm which one the door actually needs before you flip it.
