Product Description
The CompX National C9200 is one of only two mailbox locks formally listed by the USPS as approved for new CBU and 4C cluster box unit installations. If you are outfitting a new neighborhood mailbox pedestal, a 4C horizontal mailbox wall, or replacing a lock in an existing USPS-spec unit, this is the lock the Postal Service and the box manufacturers expect to see. Anything not on the approved list can get an installation rejected at inspection, so locksmiths and property managers buy these by the model number, not by "a lock that fits."
What it is
This is a pin-tumbler cam lock built specifically for exterior, pedestal-mounted neighborhood mailbox boxes and 4C cluster units. It is a keyed-different lock — every lock ships on its own key change, so no two tenants share a key — drawn from a pool of roughly 2,000 key changes. The cylinder is key-retaining: the key cannot be pulled out until the lock is returned to the locked position, which is exactly the behavior USPS wants on a shared tenant box so a compartment is never left standing unlocked with the key already gone.
What it does and who needs it
It secures an individual tenant compartment or the master/outgoing-mail door on a cluster box. The buyers are locksmiths servicing apartment and HOA mailrooms, property managers, mailbox and 4C unit installers, and USPS-approved dealers. When a tenant loses a key or moves out, you swap this lock rather than rekey the whole bank — it drops in with the included spring clip and mounting nut.
Clockwise vs. counter-clockwise — read this before you order
CompX National builds this lock in two rotations, and they are not interchangeable. The cam has to travel the correct direction to throw the latch on your specific box.
- C9100 — Locks Clockwise (CW). The cam rotates clockwise to reach the locked position.
- C9200 — Locks Counter-Clockwise (CCW). The cam rotates counter-clockwise to reach the locked position.
This is the C9200: it locks counter-clockwise (CCW). If you are not certain which rotation your box needs, look at how the existing lock throws, or call us — ordering the wrong rotation is the single most common mistake on these.
What is in the box
Each lock ships complete: the lock body, a spring clip, a mounting nut, and three (3) keys. No separate keying order is required — it arrives keyed different and ready to install.
How it installs
The lock drops through the door cutout (mounting hole 0.76" diameter, 0.635" width) and is secured from behind with the supplied spring clip and mounting nut. Set the cam for your latch geometry, confirm the rotation, and it is done. No drilling of the door if the cutout already matches the USPS spec — these are dimensioned to the standard CBU/4C opening.
Materials and construction
Pin-tumbler cylinder in a cabinet-lock body, built by CompX National (a CompX Security Products company) — the same house that supplies a large share of the OEM mailbox and cabinet lock market. The lock is key-retaining and can be factory keyed-alike if you order a keyed-alike group, though the standard stock configuration is keyed different.
