Don-Jo Wrap-Around Plate: Covering a Lock Swap's Old Holes
Posted by Kent on 16th Sep 2026
The problem: a new lock, and the old lock's holes
Swap a worn Marks lever set for a Best or Sargent cylindrical lock, or pull an old Kaba/Simplex pushbutton unit and drop in a new one, and the cross-bore rarely lines up clean. Different manufacturers use different backsets, different hole spacing, and different screw patterns. What you are left with is a door face full of extra holes around the new lock, plus mounting screws threading into wood that has already been drilled once and does not bite the way it should.
That loose bite is the real failure. A screw going into a hole that is even slightly oversized from a previous install backs out over months of door slams, and the lock starts to wobble in the door face. A wrap-around plate solves both problems in one part: it covers the mismatched holes and it reinforces the door face so the new lock's mounting screws hold.
How a Don-Jo wrap-around plate works
The plate wraps around the door edge and the two faces, sandwiching the door where the lock passes through. Its own mounting holes are pre-drilled to the specific lock series it is built for, so the new lock's screws go through the plate and into fresh, unworn steel or stainless backing instead of a wallowed-out prep hole. Don-Jo builds this line in 22-gauge steel and stainless, and the plate's own description is blunt about the job it does: reinforce the door and eliminate the loosening of latch mounting screws.
Because the plate is matched to a specific lock family, you order by which lock is going into the door, not by a generic size:
- 9K-S-CW: sized for Best and Sargent 9K-series lever locks, 4-3/4" x 9", 2-3/4" backset
- 5K-S-CW: also for Best and Sargent lever bodies, smaller footprint at 4-3/4" x 5-1/2" for a tighter door stile
- 95-S-CW: matched to Marks lever locks, 4-3/4" x 9", 2-3/4" backset
- E2000-S-CW: built for the Kaba/Simplex E2000 series pushbutton lock, 5" x 15" to cover that unit's larger footprint
All four are rated for a standard 1-3/4" door and ship in stainless steel finish, which is the finish most locksmiths default to on a reinforcement plate because it does not need to match the lever's finish exactly. It reads as hardware, not trim.
Order by the lock going IN, not the lock coming out
The backset and hole pattern on a wrap-around plate match the new lock, not the old one. If you are pulling a Marks lever and installing a Best 9K in its place, order the 9K-S-CW, sized for the lock you are installing. The plate's job is to give that new lock a clean bore and solid backing; what used to be in the door does not matter once the plate is on.
Measure twice before ordering: confirm the backset on the new lockset (most cylindrical and interconnected locks run 2-3/4", but not all), and confirm the door thickness matches 1-3/4". A wrap-around plate is not a universal part. It is built to one lock family's dimensions, and a mismatch means gaps around the edge instead of a clean cover.
When a wrap-around plate is not enough
A wrap-around plate reinforces mounting screws and hides an old cutout. It does not add pry resistance at the latch itself. If the door has been forced at the latch edge, or if the complaint is a kicked-in strike rather than a loose lockset, a wrap-around plate is the wrong part. Pair it with a proper latch guard on the door face for pry resistance, and address the frame side separately if that is where the damage actually happened.
Common questions
Do I order a wrap-around plate for the lock I'm removing or the lock I'm installing?
The lock you are installing. The plate's hole pattern and backset match the new lock's mounting dimensions, since its job is to give that lock a clean, reinforced bore in a door face that has already been drilled once for something else.
What door thickness does the Don-Jo wrap-around line fit?
The 9K-S-CW, 5K-S-CW, 95-S-CW, and E2000-S-CW are all built for a standard 1-3/4" door. Confirm your door thickness before ordering; a thicker or thinner door needs a different plate or a shimmed install.
Why does the E2000-S-CW cover so much more of the door than the others?
The Kaba/Simplex E2000 pushbutton lock has a larger mechanical body than a standard lever or knob lockset, so its prep cutout is bigger. The E2000-S-CW's 5" x 15" footprint is sized to fully cover that larger cutout, not just the lock's centerline holes.
Can a wrap-around plate cover a cutout from a completely different lock brand?
Usually, yes, as long as the new lock's own backset and hole spacing match the plate you order. The plate is matched to the lock going in, not the lock coming out, so it does not matter what brand made the old cutout, only whether the new lock's dimensions fit the plate.
Does a wrap-around plate stop a door from being pried open?
Not by itself. It reinforces the lock's mounting screws against loosening, but it does not add material at the latch edge the way a dedicated latch guard does. For pry resistance, add a latch protector on top of a clean, well-reinforced lock install.
