Some doors just need a stop. A wide interior door on a busy corridor, wheeled traffic coming through all day, needs something that holds it open on command and doesn't fold up the first month someone rolls a cart into it. That's a different job than the compact stop you'd put on a normal office door, and ordering the small one because it's what you always order is how you end up back at the door in six weeks with a bent channel.

Where the Glynn-Johnson 902H fits

How the hold-open actually works

The mechanism is simpler than it looks installed. A serrated knob on the bottom of the channel turns the hold-open function on or off. Engage it and the door holds open at a set position somewhere between 85 and 110 degrees, adjustable to the opening. Flip the knob the other way and the same unit acts purely as a stop and shock absorber, no hold-open at all. One hardware piece, two jobs, and the facilities crew doesn't need a key or a tool to switch between them. That matters more than it sounds like it should. I've seen buildings where maintenance disabled the hold-open on every door because one loud teenager kept propping the wrong one; with this knob, that's a five-second fix per door instead of a work order.

Templates fit almost any door type, including doors with conventional butt hinges and specialty hinges alike, so this isn't a special-order-only hinge-matched part.

Door opening range: know it before you order

The 902H is built for openings in the 23-1/16" to 27" range. Outside that, the geometry doesn't hold correctly and the arm won't seat the way it's supposed to. Measure the actual door opening, not the nominal door size stamped on the frame, before this goes on the order. A 3-foot door doesn't necessarily open to a number in that band once you account for the frame stop and hinge offset.

Surface mount, not concealed

This is a surface-applied unit. It mounts to the face of the door and frame, which is faster to retrofit than a concealed overhead closer, but it's visible hardware. If the spec calls for a clean look with nothing showing, that's a different product entirely, not this one. For most commercial corridors, storage rooms, and back-of-house doors, surface mount is exactly what a facilities crew wants: fast to replace if it ever does take damage, and nothing buried in the frame to dig out.

It also comes in more finishes than the satin stainless steel featured here: satin bronze, bright stainless, oil-rubbed dark bronze, and bright brass are all available in the same 902H body. Match the finish to the rest of the door hardware on the opening rather than defaulting to stainless because it's the one everybody stocks. A satin bronze 902H next to satin bronze hinges and a satin bronze lever reads like it was specified on purpose, not grabbed off a shelf.

One more install note worth knowing before the parts show up: the offset jamb bracket is what lets this unit clear door trim and stop hardware that a flush-mounted bracket would fight. On a retrofit where the frame already has trim in the way, that offset is the difference between a clean install and a bracket that has to be shimmed out. Check the frame trim before assuming a straight bolt-on.
