Look at the lock on the cabinet holding your controlled substances, your lab chemicals, your high-dollar display stock, or everybody's personnel file. Nine times out of ten it is a wafer cam lock: a chrome barrel the diameter of a nickel with a flat steel tongue swinging behind the frame and a two-digit code stamped on the face. Every one of those keys is on a chart. If what is inside the cabinet is worth more than the cabinet, that lock is a placeholder, not security. Why a wafer cam lock is a toy on a cabinet worth robbing

A cam lock is not a bolt. It is a cylinder with a flat piece of metal screwed to the back of it, and turning the key swings that metal sideways to catch the face frame. That is the entire mechanism. A cylinder in the box means the cabinet gets its own key on its own keyway, belonging to no system, one more unstamped orphan in the coffee can of cabinet keys in the back office. Ship it less cylinder and you fit a cylinder cut to your building's keying instead. The cabinet sits on the same master key system as the mechanical room and the back door. The department manager's key opens it. The facility master opens it. Nothing new goes on anybody's ring.

Measure before you order

Barrel length against the front thickness

The barrel is 1-3/8". Put a tape on the edge of the door or drawer front and read the real thickness of the material the lock passes through. Standard casework is usually fine. Thick applied fronts, doubled panels, a laminated lab bench slab, or a door somebody already faced over are where these come back. Heavy front, call before you order.

Bolt projection against where the bolt lands

Bolt projection is 15/16". That is the throw you have, so look at what the bolt goes into. On a face-frame cabinet it catches the frame. On a frameless box or an overlay drawer front there may be nothing behind the door until the bolt reaches the case side, and the geometry gets tight. Decide where the plastic bar strike mounts before you drill.

Handing

None. The 800LCM is non-handed, so there is no left or right to get wrong and no second part number for the other half of a pair. On a run with doors swinging both directions, one SKU covers the job.

Finish matching on a millwork run
