It is the difference between hardware that passes accessibility code on a public route and hardware that does not.

1011: the knob, and why it is limited to non-accessible doors

The Simplex 1011 is a Simplex 1000 Series mechanical pushbutton lock with a round knob. It is all-mechanical: no batteries, no wiring, thousands of possible combinations, and the code is changed right at the lock without pulling it off the door. It carries a 2-3/4" backset, a 1/2" latch throw, and is rated ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 with a 3-hour UL/ULC fire rating.

What its listing does not claim is an ADA-compliant design, and that omission matters. Building codes based on the ADA and ANSI A117.1 require operable hardware on accessible routes to work without tight grasping, pinching, or twisting the wrist, which is exactly what a round knob demands. The 1011 belongs on a door outside the accessible path: a back office, a storage room, an equipment closet, anywhere the building does not require accessible hardware on that specific opening.

LR1011: the lever, built for the accessible route

The Simplex LR1011 is the same mechanical idea on the Simplex L1000 Series body, but with a lever instead of a knob, and its listing states an ADA-compliant lever design directly. Same backset, same throw, same Grade 1 rating, same 3-hour fire rating. The only functional difference from the 1011 is the operating trim, and that is the one that decides whether the door meets code on an accessible route: a main entrance, a public restroom, any door a visitor is expected to use without assistance.

Both the 1011 and LR1011 ship as Combination Entry Only: no key cylinder at all. If you lose the combination or need to rekey the door, you are reprogramming the pushbutton sequence, not cutting a new key.

5010XKWL: when you need a key override too

There is a third option worth knowing about if the door needs a backup for staff who do not know the combination, or for management access outside the shared code. The Simplex 5010XKWL, on the Simplex 5000 Series body, also carries an ADA-compliant lever design but adds a Kaba 90 keyway cylinder for key override. It is listed as exit trim, meaning it is meant to pair with an exit device rather than function as a standalone lockset, so confirm that matches your door before ordering. If a plain combination lever does not give you the backup access you need, this is the model that does.

What does not change across the line

All three are genuinely mechanical: no batteries to replace, no wiring to run, and the combination is changed at the lock itself in the field. All three are rated for door thickness 1-3/8" to 2-1/4", all carry the 3-hour UL/ULC fire rating, and all are weather-resistant for indoor or outdoor use. The 1011 ships factory-handed LH, field reversible; the LR1011 ships factory-handed RH. Confirm handing before ordering either one, since getting it wrong on a mechanical lockset means a return, not a quick field fix.

Which one to order

If the door is on an accessible route, public-facing, or you are not certain, order the LR1011 lever. The knob 1011 is the right, lower-cost choice only for a door you can confirm is outside the accessible path. Is a knob lockset ever allowed on a public building's front door?

Generally no, if that door is on an accessible route as most primary public entrances are. Confirm the specific accessible-route requirement for your building and jurisdiction, but as a rule of thumb, if the public uses that door without assistance, plan on lever trim.

Can I swap the knob for a lever on an existing 1011 without replacing the whole lock?

It is not a field swap. The knob and lever versions are different model numbers on different chassis, not a field-interchangeable trim kit, so upgrading to accessible hardware means replacing the lockset.

Does the 5010XKWL's key override let me skip programming a combination at all?

No. The key override is a backup path, not a replacement for the mechanical combination, which is still how the lock is meant to be used day to day. The key exists for when the combination is not the right access method for a specific person or situation.

Can I change the combination myself, or does it need a locksmith?
